‘I thought I might find you down here, doing a Snow White and singing to the animals!’ Ben leant over the five-bar gate as Ellie filled up the donkeys’ water trough and flicked a stream of water in his direction, making him jump back out of the way. She had been singing away to the animals as she often did, but she hadn’t been expecting Ben to make it to the farm so quickly after she’d called him, much less catch her in the act of putting on an impromptu one-woman show.

‘You should never insult a woman when she’s got a hosepipe in her hand, not unless you want to end up soaking wet!’

‘I’m not insulting you; I think it’s great that you sing to the animals, but then I think everything about you is great.’ Ellie couldn’t help smiling at Ben’s words and it had been on the tip of her tongue to say she loved everything about him too, but it was far too early for the L word, even in that context. It would probably send him running back to the surgery and she needed his expertise.

‘Thanks so much for coming up to see Dolly again. I can’t believe she hasn’t given birth yet, she looks fit to pop, and you’d be a much better judge than me about whether she’s okay or not.’

‘I’m sure she’s okay, but you know I never need an excuse to come up to the farm, because you’re here.’ Ben moved closer to Ellie as he spoke.

‘I wish you’d let me pay you something for all your time.’

‘I’m just helping out a good friend that’s all.’

‘I thought we were beginning to be a bit more than that.’ She’d been about to kiss him, when a squawking seagull suddenly decided to see if Gerald and the other donkeys had left any of their food. The whoosh of air, as it swooped down, made it feel as if it was only inches above Ellie’s head and she dropped her bucket in shock, the bird phobia she’d been convinced she’d cracked kicking back in.

‘Are you okay?’ Ben put a hand under her chin and she wondered if he could feel her shaking.

‘I got attacked by a bird as a child and they just make me really nervous when they get too close. I’m trying to get over it, but it’s just a stupid, irrational fear.’

‘No it isn’t. Something bad happened to you and that changed the way you see things that wouldn’t worry other people. It doesn’t make it stupid. Trying to move on from that makes you brave.’ He could have been talking about so much more than just birds and, for a split second, she almost told him everything – why she’d clung on to Rupert when deep down she’d known he wasn’t right for her and why she’d stood by and watched as he ruthlessly bought up businesses that took advantage of their owners’ desperation. Even working for the bank had gone
